Postpartum Essentials - FAQ for Survival Mode
What should I expect in the first weeks after birth?
The first few weeks are a blur of bleeding, leaking, healing, and figuring out this brand-new version of life. Whether you had a vaginal birth or a C-section, your body is doing a lot, and recovery doesn’t happen overnight.
Rest when you can (yes, we know that’s annoying advice), drink tons of water, eat real food, and ask for help. You just did something incredible!!
Will I really be wearing diapers forever?
It definitely feels like it. Most postpartum bleeding (called lochia) lasts around 4-6 weeks, but it can come and go. Some days it’s like a heavy period, other days it’s light spotting.
If bleeding suddenly increases, smells off, or you’re soaking through a pad in under an hour, it’s always a good idea to check in with your provider just to be safe.
And no.. you won’t be in mesh undies and pads forever. We promise.
How do I take care of myself after giving birth?
First things first: your body just did something incredible. But that doesn’t mean it feels good right away.
Taking care of yourself after birth means rest (as much as you can), hydration, nourishing food, and letting others help, even when it’s hard to ask.
Some postpartum essentials we swear by? A cozy robe that feels like a hug, a sitz bath spray that makes bathroom trips less brutal, a hemorrhoid balm that actually soothes, and soft clothes that don’t dig.
Oh! and stool softeners. Non-negotiable.
But truly? One of the biggest acts of self-care in this season is giving yourself grace. You don’t have to bounce back. You just have to heal, slowly, gently, and with support.
Is it normal to feel sad or overwhelmed after birth?
So normal. Between the hormonal drop, exhaustion, and life change, the emotional rollercoaster is real. You might cry, feel disconnected, or wonder if you're doing anything right. You’re not broken, you're postpartum.
(If the sadness sticks around, gets worse, or makes it hard to function, don’t wait. Reach out. You’re not alone, and there is help.)
