Understanding Your Cycle

The Basics (Plain-English Edition)

  • Cycle Phases: Follicular Phase: The first half of your cycle, from your period to ovulation. Ovulation: Usually happens around day 14 in a “typical” 28-day cycle (but there’s no such thing as one-size-fits-all). Luteal Phase: The second half of your cycle, from ovulation to your next period where implantation would happen.

  • Normal” Can Vary: A healthy cycle can range anywhere from 24–35 days, and ovulation might shift cycle to cycle. That doesn’t mean something’s wrong, it means your body is responding to life.

  • Ovulation Signs to Watch For: Stretchy, clear cervical mucus (egg-white consistency), A slight rise in basal body temperature (BBT), Ovulation pain (a dull ache near one ovary), Increased libido, energy, or sense of smell, Positive ovulation predictor test (LH test)

Tools to Try (only if you want to)

You don’t have to track everything. But if you want to, these can be helpful:

  • Kindara App
For cycle tracking and basal body temperature (BBT) with a focus on body literacy. Kindara helps you learn your patterns over time, not just guess at ovulation dates.
    Download Kindara

  • Basal Body Temperature (BBT) Tracking
Your resting temperature rises slightly after ovulation. By taking your temp first thing each morning (before getting out of bed), you can start to see your cycle pattern and confirm whether or not you’ve ovulated.
(Tip: You’ll need a BBT-specific thermometer for more precise readings like Femme)

  • LH Test Strips
Inexpensive at-home urine tests that detect the luteinizing hormone surge that triggers ovulation. Great for identifying your most fertile window, especially if your cycles vary.

  • Ovulation Calculators
Helpful as a starting point, but they often assume a textbook 28-day cycle, so take predictions with a grain of salt. Use them as a loose guide, not a guarantee.
    Try The Bump’s Calculator

  • Cervical Mucus Tracking
One of the most natural and reliable ways to know when you’re fertile. Look for clear, stretchy, egg-white-like discharge, a sign your body is ready to welcome sperm. No test required, just a little practice and awareness.

Gentle Reminders

  • You can’t “miss your chance” by not doing it perfectly. Sperm can live up to 5 days in the reproductive tract! There’s grace built into your biology.

  • Not everyone ovulates mid-cycle. That’s okay. That can be common.

  • If things feel confusing or inconsistent, it might be time to explore fertility testing. (Not because you're failing, but because you're advocating.)
